NCRLL had a strong presence at the AERA annual convention this spring in New York. Below is a listing of many of the presentations by our membership, featuring a symposium sponsored by NCRLL.

The Cultural Historical Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association is organizing a pre-AERA Annual conference workshop. The title of the workshop is: CULTURAL HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES ON PLAY, IMAGINATION, CREATIVITY IN DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING. It will take place on Sunday, March 23, 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM at: East Side Institute, 920 Broadway, 14th floor, New York, NY 10010.

with Jaekyung Lee: “When Writing Intensive Reading Comprehension (WIRC) Works: Preliminary Results of Two-Year Experiments in Low-Performing Urban Schools” (Monday March 24, 2:15-3:45 pm, Hilton New York/East Suite 4th), and “How Writing-Intensive Reading Comprehension (WIRC) Works: Insight from Qualitative Studies During Two Experiments” (Thursday, March 27, 12:25 - 1:05 PM, Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers/Metropolitan Ballroom, Metropolitan East, 2nd Floor).

Julie Coiro will present “Exploring the Developmental Reading Profiles of Three Adolescents as They Comprehend Information on the Internet” at a roundtable session (Wednesday March 26, 8:15-8:55 AM, Hilton New York/Trianon Ballroom/Petit Trianon, 3rd floor).

Judith Green will participate in an AERA Professional Development Training Workshop entitled “Using and Analyzing Video Data in Ethnographic and Cross-Disciplinary Studies of Learning Settings From Multiple Perspectives.” Other presenters at the workshop include David Bloome, Ricki Goldman, Susan R. Goldman, Minjeong Kim, Chaoyan Dong, Helen Kwah, Audra Skukauskaite, and W. Douglas Baker (Sunday, March 23, 9-6 PM, Hilton New York Bryant Suite, 2nd floor).


George Hruby will present “Current Neuroscience on Reading Comprehension” in a session titled “Reading Comprehension: Instructional Methods and Perspectives,” chaired by Janet S. Gaffney.  Other presenters include Paola Pionieta, Jaekyung Lee, James Collins, Jeffery Fox, Rachel Brown, Jongseong Jeong, Janet Gaffney. Gina Biancarosa will serve as discussant. Mary Juzwik, Martin Nystrand, Sean Kelly, and Michael Sherry will present “Using Oral Narrative Talk in Dialogic Literary Discussions” in a symposium titled “Learning through Extended Talk.“ Other presenters include Neil Mercer, Lyn Dawes, Paul Thompson, Mary Bailey, Maureen Boyd, and Donald Rubin. Melissa Mosley and Rebecca Rogers will present, “Racial Literacy in Teacher Education: Tackling Whiteness Studies and Critical Race Theory in Book Club Discussions” in a symposium organized by Mark Jury entitled “Book Clubs as Contested Communities for Adult Readers” (March 28, 10:35 AM, Crowne Plaza Hotel Times Square, Room 1506,
15th Floor).

Peter Smagorinsky and Michelle Zoss are presenting “Teaching drawing and writing in a secondary literacy class as multimodal composition” as part of a symposium entitled “A Vygotskian Perspective on the Arts,” chaired by Cathreen Connery. Other presenters include Ana Marjanovic-Shane, Cathrene Connery, Seana Moran.
